The BAMM forum 2023 took place in the Peak District, and each participant brought a roundel representing fauna or flora of the Peak District. This is a slow worm. The roundels were then affixed to the wall of the forum centre.

Some samples, which were made to decide with the client which style they were looking for.

From this initial photo of racers at the Gobi March, A Racing The Planet ultramarathon in the Chinese Gobi desert, I was commissioned to make a mosaic for one of the participants. The photo was modified and some elements removed, some people added and the background changed. The result is below.

The following are mosaics made from photos and collages of my ultramarathon races in Antarctica in November 2022, and in Lapland in August of the same year. These races are organised by Racingtheplanet.com and you can find pictures and information on their website or on Facebook. Lapland

The mosaic below is inspired from a collage of photos of Lapland, during the autumn season.

The materials used include broken plates, marble, stained glass, vitreous glass, stained glass and rocks and pebbles, as well as smalti and unglazed ceamic tiles.

This is a mixed media artwork, made from stained glass, felted wool and bark and twigs collected in Lapland, Finland, during the August Roving Race with Racingtheplanet.

This mosaic is a misty forest view, with a discreet lapland woodpecker. It is made of unglazed ceramic tiles with black grey and white grout, on wood.

The two mixed media works below are made of unglazed ceramic tesserae and felted Merino wool. They represent a Sami woman and a Sami man, from Lapland in the north of Finland.

This is a mixed media artwork of a chiaroscuro forest scene in vitreous glass tesserae and felted wool.

The following is a felted wool painting of a Lapland forest scene with fly agaric mushroom colonies

Antarctica

Felted wool reproduction of a runner at The Last Desert Race from RacingthePlanet, Petermann Island, November 2022

The following mosaic is a reproduction of a photo taken by race photographer Tiago Diz. It was taken on Deception Island, South Shetland Islands, which is a caldera over a still active volcano. Research stations were previously totally destroyed by volcanic eruptions but are still operating in the summer. The island used to be a fur-sealing station up until 1825, then a whaling station until 1931. Seals and whales had been avoiding the area and are only now slowly coming back to the shores of Deception island, named after its deceptive appearance as a whole island, which is in effect ring-shaped around the caldera bay.

The mosaic is made of unglazed ceramic, vitreous glass, pate de verre, with some marble and smalti.

These two mosaics are also reproductions of photographs from the Antarctic Peninsula. Gentoo penguins are common on the Peninsula, along with chin strap, Adelie and kings. Made with stained glass, broken china, marble and smalti.

Below are photos of the Antarctic Peninsula, taken during the 2023 edition of the Last Desert ultramarathon race with RacingthePlanet.

This is a marble mosaic on a wooden substrate, created for the London School of Mosaic Diploma. It represents a win by submission in wrestling/brazilian jiu jitsu. It took 200 hours from design to finish.
